Bigo explores how our bodies perceive and sense the world, examining how the collision of/integration of/conflict between? inherited, cultural beliefs and scientific fact shape the way we understand our bodies. She considers how the results of scientific study, which are seemingly objective and empirical, are also accepted as new versions of subjective beliefs within society.
In this exhibition, the artist will showcase earlier works such as tOOOOOrso (2016, 2017) and the new VR performance piece Splint (2024) as well as the 3-channel 3D animation video and 6-channel sound installation Splint, Me, Mom, Grandma (2023). The exhibition also features pieces from the Dream Drawing series (2022-2024), which include foil stamped drawings and punch needle embroidery works.
Unveiling the new VR performance piece Splint (2024), the work is based on the artist's sleep apnea-induced hypnagogic hallucinations experienced while participating at the MMCA Goyang Residency in 2022. The artist views the VR device as an extension of the body that delicately blends the virtual and the real, questioning whether it is possible to create a new boundary-defying experience through this artwork. The audience member is invited into the artist's room to watch the VR content alone, while a holographic performer guides a meditation session that generates the feeling of one’s body stretching.
The VR performance experience (with a runtime of approximately 18 minutes) will operate daily from 2 PM to 7:30 PM in 30-minute intervals and requires reservation.
